Programs

The Saint John Amateur Speed Skating Club (SJASSC) offers a range of programs for all ages and skill levels, from beginners to competitive athletes. The club’s programs follow a progression, with skaters advancing as they develop skills and confidence.

  • Learn to Skate: This is the entry point for most skaters. These programs, which may be offered on weekends or weeknights, are designed for children as young as four and focus on building fundamental skills like balance and agility in a fun, game-based environment. Skaters can use hockey or figure skates.
  • Introduction to Speed Skating: This program is for skaters who have mastered basic skills and are ready to learn the fundamentals of speed skating technique. It’s geared toward developing speed, agility, and coordination. Speed skates are highly recommended at this level and are available to rent from the club.
  • Competitive Programs: For more advanced skaters, the club offers intermediate and advanced groups. These programs require more time on the ice, along with dryland training, and are focused on refining technical skills, endurance, and race strategy. Skaters in these groups typically compete in meets throughout the province and the Maritimes, with some advancing to represent the club and New Brunswick at national competitions.
